Authorities Seek Tips After Utility Poles Pulled Down For Copper Theft

BENSON, N.C. — Johnston County authorities are investigating an unusual theft after someone used a vehicle to pull down several utility poles before stealing overhead telephone cable in the Meadow community.

The theft was reported Tuesday by Brightspeed, which told deputies several sections of telephone line had been cut and removed along N.C. 50 South and Holly Grove Road.

According to the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office, the suspects apparently used a vehicle to pull the Brightspeed utility poles to the ground—or with enough force to snap the poles—allowing them to access and remove the overhead cable.

Brightspeed estimated the thieves stole approximately $10,000 worth of telephone cable. Damage to the utility poles is expected to cost an additional $3,000, bringing the total loss to about $13,000.

Investigators believe the theft occurred sometime between July 17 and Aug. 4.
