Benson Holds Community Day 2018

Springtime is a busy time in Benson. When the grass turns greener and the sunshine pushes out the lingering cold, the calendar quickly becomes chock-full of fun things to do.

Spring cleanup, outdoor concerts, evening shopping strolls — all of these bring in visitors and residents alike to Benson’s parks and downtown business district.

And then there’s Community Day.

Inside Dr. PK Vyas Community Park on Saturday, it was like a small town within a small town. Benson staff, police, firefighters, line workers, public works, parks and recreation, local churches — in one place enjoying the weekend.

Community Day marks the kickoff of the wee-ball and tee-ball seasons for Benson Parks and Recreation and the plink of aluminum bats could be heard throughout the day.

Benson Police were cooking hotdogs to hand out, while the Fire Department was showing off a fire truck to curious kids and walking around with Smokey the Bear.

Benson Utilities staff handed out several home energy efficiency kits, the Planning Department had kites for kids to enjoy, there was sand art, face painting, balloon animals, tacos — something for everybody!  Contributed photos
