Bird Bath Bandits Ruffle Feathers In Smithfield

SMITHFIELD, N.C. — It’s not every day someone steals a concrete bird bath. It’s even more unusual when two disappear from the same neighborhood.

Smithfield police are investigating a pair of unusual thefts reported July 14 involving concrete bird baths taken from two homes just a few blocks apart.

An 81-year-old Pace Street resident told officers a concrete bird bath and pedestal had been removed from the yard.

Later that same day, a 60-year-old resident on nearby Britt Street also reported a concrete bird bath missing. In addition to the bird bath, two one-gallon gasoline cans were reported stolen.

Concrete bird baths are heavy and awkward to move, leading investigators to believe the thief or thieves likely used a vehicle to haul away the items.

Smithfield Police said they have no suspects or leads and have not determined whether the two thefts are connected.

Anyone with information about the incidents is asked to contact the Smithfield Police Department.
