Johnston County students will receive a three day break next Thanksgiving and a two week break for Christmas under a new 2017-18 school calendar approved by the Johnston County Board of Education.
In a 7-0 vote, the school board approved the calendar recommended by Chief Personnel Officer Brian Vetrano. A total of 44 members of the Calendar Committee, made up of principals, students, parents and members of the community, met to review 21 proposed calendars earlier this year. The 21 proposed calendars was narrowed to 3 and then placed on the school districts website. Based on feedback received from the three proposals, one was selected to be presented to the school board.
Vetrano said a school calendar must contain a total of 215 days. For 2017-2018, there must be either 185 student days or 1,025 hours, 10 annual leave (vacation) days, and 11 holidays.
Under the approved calendar, students will begin the 2017-18 school year on August 28, 2017 and end on June 7, 2018. Similar to the current calendar, there will be 8 teacher workdays before the start of the new school term.
