Incumbent Johnston County Commissioner Tony Braswell of Pine Level easily won the Republican Primary for the District 6 seat Tuesday. Braswell carried 52.6% of the vote total over challengers Lee Jackson and Mike Powell.
In unofficial results, Braswell received 9,470 votes, Powell 4,869 votes (27%) and Jackson 3,673 votes (20.4%). By receiving more than 40 percent of the vote total, Mr. Braswell also avoided a possible runoff.
“First of all to my family, thanks for allowing me once again the opportunity to move forward to the general election. To my opponents, thanks for running a good race and thanks for the willingness to serve. To the voters, thank you for allowing me to continue to do this job, as I am honored to represent you as your county commissioner. We will move on to November and hopefully I can continue to serve this county.”
Dr. Gettys Cohen Jr. of Smithfield, a Democrat, will challenge Commissioner Braswell in November.
