One person died and three others were hurt following a fiery four vehicle crash on Interstate 40 in Johnston County Tuesday afternoon.
The accident was reported at 12:57pm Interstate 40 at the 322 mile marker near the Elevation community.
After the impact one of the vehicles caught on fire and burned.
One person died at the scene. Two others were burned and were rushed to the hospital. A fourth person was also injured but their condition was not immediately known.
Multiple fire departments and EMS agencies responded to the scene including Johnston County Emergency Management.
I-40 was shut down between the NC 242 Exit (325 mile marker) near Benson and the Highway 210 Exit (319 mile marker) near McGee’s Crossroads for about 3 hours before being reopened.
The NC Highway Patrol, Johnston County Sheriff’s Office and NC Department of Transportation assisting with traffic control.
Troopers have not released the cause of the crash or the names of those involved.
