Caller Scams $36,000 From Local Business

SMITHFIELD – A Smithfield business was scammed out of $36,000 recently. The incident is under investigation.

Smithfield Police said a supervisor at Lowe’s Home Improvement at 1330 N. Brightleaf Boulevard received a phone call prior to closing on June 30. The caller claimed they worked with Lowe’s and a payment had not been made to a vendor for a recent delivery to the Smithfield store.

The scammer instructed the supervisor to take money from the business and transfer it to Bitcoin to pay the vendor. The supervisor reportedly took $36,000 in cash and went to a Bitcoin ATM in Raleigh and transferred the money to an account as requested by the unknown caller.

Only after completing the transaction did the supervisor realize the caller was not from Lowe’s corporate office, rather it was a scam.

Police said they are investigating but it is unlikely the money can be recovered.

  1. The fact that someone in charge of that much money at a store didn’t see a problem with sending it as Bitcoin is quite concerning. Wow.

  2. This leaves me with so many questions. What does this person “supervise”? There are procedures in place for these types of things. Losing $36k is not the only problem for this business.

  3. I’m guessing this supervisor is not in charge of store security, shrinkage, or selling home security systems .LOL!
