Candy Disagreement Prompts Police Response

SMITHFIELD, N.C. — It wasn’t your typical emergency response, but in Smithfield this week, a dispute over Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups had police stepping in — proving that sometimes, even the most innocent sweet tooth can cause a stir.

Smithfield Police confirmed that officers were called to the Speedway at 2103 S. Brightleaf Boulevard around 7:52 p.m. on November 11 after a disagreement between a 56-year-old customer and a store clerk turned heated.

According to police, the man told officers he was buying a Reese’s when he mentioned to the clerk that the price seemed a bit high. Words were exchanged and the clerk allegedly threw the customer’s money back at him.

Startled, the man left with the candy — but soon worried it might look like he’d stolen it. Hoping to clear things up, he called police himself and met them outside the store. Police escorted him as he returned the Reese’s candy back inside.

Officers determined the incident was strictly verbal and that no charges would be filed against either party. Both the customer and clerk went their separate ways — and while no candy was consumed, the matter was resolved without further meltdown.

    • I know the person involved in this incident and that is not the way it went down at all. the clerk actuallhy had a gun and was threatening his life and when he went back to pay for the candy he was pretty sure that the clerk would be arrested. she was so far out of line and 100% in the wrong. she had her hand in her purse and repeatedly told my friend that she would blow him away. Dealing directly with the public isnt her strong suit.

  1. I go into that store almost every day at different times of the day for gas snacks and to get a cooler of ice. And I can honestly say all the cashiers have been overly nice to me…. I have never had cashier. Try to pull a gun on me or even threaten me with a gun and I have been going to this same store for over 4 years….. These cashiers have always treated me with kindness and respect….
