One Week Later, Cause Of Separate Fires At Same Location Remain Under Investigation

DUNN – Authorities continue to investigate the cause of two separate fires at the same location. Just after 7:00am Wednesday, Sept. 20 a fire was reported in the 4400 block of Wood’s Crossroads Road, near NC 242 South, in southern Johnston County.

Firefighters located a singlewide mobile home ablaze. Nearby, a wood structure used for storage burning was in flames. The two fires also spread to an abandoned camper and truck.

Because there were no fire hydrants in the immediate vicinity, a tanker task force was initiated. Four fire departments battled the flames, while 12 other departments responded with tanker trucks to shuttle water to the scene.

Fire units from Johnston, Sampson, Harnett, Wayne and Wake counties responded.

The Johnston County Sheriff’s Office and Johnston County Fire Marshal’s Office are jointly investigating. Authorities have now confirmed there were two different fires, not a single fire that spread. The cause of the fires has not been determined.

The mobile home was not occupied. Officials said the mobile home had been condemned by Johnston County building inspectors a week earlier.
