Charges Filed In Head On Collision With Deputy Sheriff

A driver who struck a sheriff’s deputies car head-on has been charged with driving while impaired.

Accident-Sheriffs-CarDeputy Matthew Johnson had his marked Johnston County Sheriff’s Office patrol cruiser parked on Interstate 40 at the exit ramp to Highway 242 near Benson on the night of Jan. 22nd directing traffic off the interstate due to downed power lines from the winter storm.

Troopers said Justin Royd Davis, 33, of Eagle Rock Road, Wendell was operating a 2013 Nissan and traveling at 55 mph when he struck Deputy Johnson’s parked 2015 Dodge Charger on I-40.  Both drivers received minor injuries but were not transported to the hospital, according to an accident report.

Davis was charged with driving while impaired by a state trooper.  Damage to the patrol car was estimated at $12,000. Damage to the Nissan was placed at $10,000.

The accident report was not released by the Highway Patrol until Feb. 1st.
