SILER CITY – A public school and a Walmart store were briefly placed on lock down during a manhunt in Chatham County. At 9:55am Monday, the State Highway Patrol was on routine patrol on US 421 northbound near Ike Brooks Road in Chatham County when a stolen blue 2014 Chevrolet Corvette passed a marked State Highway Patrol cruiser at 111 miles per hour in a 65 mile per hour zone.
The Corvette was one of four sports cars reported stolen hours earlier from a business in Johnston County.
Troopers activated their emergency equipment, lights, and siren, however the operator of the Corvette failed to stop, and a pursuit ensued.
The pursuit lasted approximately three minutes before the driver jumped and ran from the vehicle near US 64 in Siler City.
Troopers searched the area, with the assistance of K-9 handlers from the North Carolina Department of Corrections, but were unable to locate the suspect. Virginia Cross Elementary School and WalMart activated security lockdown procedures during the search. Both locations have since resumed normal operations.
The suspect was described as a black male with black hair and dreadlocks that appears to be in his early twenties. He was last seen traveling east on-foot through a heavily wooded area wearing a red hoodie. Troopers and K-9 handlers cleared the scene at 1:31 p.m.
They will get this punk also.
