Children Left In Car Unattended, Police Chief Says

SMITHFIELD – Police cited a Smithfield mother with two counts of child neglect.

Around 5:54pm Friday, January 31, Smithfield Police were dispatched to the Walmart parking lot, at 1299 N. Brightleaf Boulevard, after a concerned citizen reported two small children were in a car unattended.

Police Chief Pete Hedrick said the children, ages 9 months and 4 years-old, had been left inside a car for approximately 30 minutes. Their 23 year-old mother was issued a citation for two counts of misdemeanor child neglect and released at the scene pending a court appearance in April.

The children were not harmed.

  1. You have got to be kidding me, “mother was issued a citation for two counts of misdemeanor child neglect and released at the scene” She should have been arrested with NO BOND an had her children taken away by family. There are so many families that want children and they can’t have them. And here’s some unethical woman not taking care of her children. Our justice system sucks. People need to start standing up and protesting!

    • Really y did they let her go if she did that there is no telling what else she does or where else she leaves them alone at . They will just fall hru the system with no punishment

  2. You want to run around protesting that cps should take more kids? You are so ignorant. Shut-up. The devil separates families.

    • I didn’t say cps should take them away stupid!! I said “family” or let someone adopt them that can’t have children!

      • That’s the only way to do it, through cps. You are so ignorant. That wasn’t the point.

      • They have a case being investigated by cps no doubt they were called and investigated with any neglect charges. This whole commentary is ignorant. The professionals are doing their job. This woman will have to go through rehabilitation process. Shut up really you don’t think there’s better things to protest?
