CLAYTON – When you flip a switch and the lights come on, that moment feels simple. But behind it is a team of trained professionals working hard to make sure the power is safe, reliable, and always ready when you need it.
The Town of Clayton is proud to recognize National Lineman Appreciation Day on Friday, April 18. This day honors the dedicated line workers who build and maintain the electrical system that keeps our homes, schools, and businesses running.
Lineman work is dangerous, physically demanding, and often done in bad weather. Whether they are restoring power during a storm or building a new power line from scratch, linemen put themselves at risk to serve others. In Clayton, these men and women are known as problem-solvers, team players, and protectors of the power grid.
“Line work is a job most people do not see up close,” said Project Coordinator Ethan Poppe. “But they see the results every day. Linemen do more than restore power. They build systems from the ground up, often starting with nothing and creating something that serves an entire community.”

As a Project Coordinator, Poppe helps design and plan electrical infrastructure before the crews begin work. He makes sure materials are available, permits are in place, and projects stay on schedule. His work helps linemen stay focused and efficient in the field.
Cavin Davis, an Electric Line Technician II, understands the value of that support. He spends many of his days setting poles, hanging wire, and making sure the power stays flowing.
“We are responsible for making sure the job is done right and safe,” said Davis. “Even on a hard day, we know we are doing something important for the Town.”
Davis said teamwork is what makes the job special. Every person on the crew watches out for each other. Everyone is expected to be alert and prepared.

“There are no shortcuts,” said Davis. “We all want to go home safe at the end of the day.”
Jacob Robinson, also an Electric Line Technician II, agreed. He said the team’s safety depends on trust and communication.
“We all count on each other out there,” said Robinson. “The work is tough, but it brings us together. We are like family.”
According to the U.S. Department of Labor, line workers are among the top 10 most dangerous jobs in the country. That is why training, protective gear, and following safety rules are part of every shift. For the Clayton Electric team, safety and hard work are just as vital as their commitment to service.
Take a moment on April 18 to thank a lineman and remember the people who work behind the scenes to keep the lights on.
Thank you so much for all you do. 🙏
