Clayton Man Accused Of Stealing Credit Card From A Friend

BENSON – A Clayton man was arrested around 2:20am Monday, August 21 on felony charges. Michael Jason Singletary, age 41, of Lucy Court, was charged with two counts of financial fraud.

Hours earlier, around 10:30pm Sunday, a 27 year-old Four Oaks man said he was sitting in his car outside Taco Bell, on Highway 210 near Interstate 40, eating supper. The victim said he recognized Singletary at the restaurant as a friend he had not seen in some time.

The victim invited Singletary to sit in the car with him, and after a few minutes, Singletary left. While leaving the victim’s car, Singletary allegedly stole a credit card from the victim.

Within minutes, the victim said he received a text notification someone had used his credit card inside a nearby Food Lion to make purchases of $1.48 and $61.48. The victim called the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office to report the incident.

Deputies responded and following an investigation, identified Singletary as the suspect who used the stolen credit card. Singletary was located and taken into custody. He was jailed on a $5,000 secured bond.
