Clayton Manufacturer Plays Supporting Role In Growing Pharmaceutical Industry

CLAYTON — As Clayton’s pharmaceutical and life-sciences sector continues to grow, another local manufacturer is working behind the scenes to support companies operating in those industries.
MM Packaging Clayton provides packaging-related services for customers that include pharmaceutical companies in and around Clayton.
The company is being highlighted during National Manufacturing Month in October as one of the manufacturers operating within the town’s expanding industrial base.
Employees at the Clayton facility work in production, quality assurance, engineering, logistics, maintenance, customer service, administration and management.
Client Services Manager Kim Burns helps oversee customer orders as they move through the plant and serves as a connection between MM Packaging and pharmaceutical companies the facility serves.
The company’s Clayton location places it near a number of those customers, allowing engineers and other representatives to visit the facility and work directly with MM Packaging employees.
“It’s just a great community,” Burns said.
Company officials said the operation has adapted over the years to changes in technology, customer demand and manufacturing processes.
Some employees have remained with the company for extended periods, advancing into other positions and developing specialized skills.
The variety of jobs reflects how manufacturing has changed from the traditional image of employees working primarily on production lines.
Modern manufacturing operations also rely on engineers, quality-control employees, planners, designers, logistics specialists, customer-service representatives and managers.
Managing Director Carl Bhedwar said the company values its relationship with Clayton.
“Clayton has been a tremendous spot for this plant for years and years,” Bhedwar said. “We want to see that continue for a long time.”
Clayton Economic Development Coordinator Amanda Lewis said manufacturers such as MM Packaging provide local employment while also connecting Clayton to industries and supply chains extending beyond Johnston County.
“Their presence in Clayton creates career opportunities for our residents, strengthens our local economy and connects our community to industries with a global reach,” Lewis said.
MM Packaging’s Clayton operation is part of a broader manufacturing sector that has become increasingly connected to pharmaceutical and life-sciences companies operating in the area.
Town officials say those manufacturers contribute jobs, investment and tax revenue while supporting companies throughout the region.
