A Johnston County man was killed Thursday afternoon after a single-vehicle collision near Benson.
John Griffin Jr., 45, of Clayton was killed while riding a 2014 Yamaha motorcycle north on Interstate 95 around 1:30 p.m.
According to North Carolina State Highway Patrol spokesman C.E. Summerlin, Mr. Griffin took the exit ramp onto Interstate 40 west when he traveled off the roadway to the right. After leaving the roadway the motorcycle struck a fence post and ejected Mr. Griffin from the motorcycle. He struck a nearby tree before the motorcycle struck him. He was pinned between the tree and motorcycle.
He succumbed to the injuries at the scene.
Excessive speed for the curve is considered to be a contributing factor, according to Trooper Summerlin. Alcohol is not considered a factor in the collision. Courtesy The Daily Record
