Clayton Names New Parks & Rec Assistant Director

CLAYTON, NC – The Town of Clayton has named Lauren Box as its new Parks and Recreation Assistant Director, bringing more than 15 years of experience supporting programs, staff, and public services. She began her role with the Town at the beginning of April.
Box most recently served as Recreation Superintendent for the City of San Jose, California, where she led programs for youth and seniors while also expanding services for individuals living with disabilities. In that role, she oversaw staff, managed budgets, and worked with partners to strengthen offerings across the city.
She now steps into a role that focuses on both daily operations and long-term planning. Box will support the Parks and Recreation Director while helping lead maintenance, recreation, and athletic services. She will also work alongside staff to care for spaces and deliver experiences that bring people together.
Her background includes leading large teams and managing grant-funded programs. She has also used data and community feedback to refine services, helping organizations better understand who they serve and how to respond to those needs.
“I was drawn to Clayton because of its focus on community and the chance to be part of what comes next,” said Box. “I look forward to building relationships and understanding what matters most to residents. That insight helps shape programs that feel welcoming, useful, and worth coming back to.”
Parks and Recreation Director Todd Riddick said Box joins the department at a time when the Town continues to carry out its Parks and Recreation Master Plan and focus on strong, well-maintained spaces.
“Clayton is evolving, and it is important that we respond in a thoughtful way,” said Riddick. “Lauren’s experience aligns with our focus on strong programs and well-maintained spaces. She understands how to support staff while keeping services consistent and responsive to the community.”
Box holds a Master of Science in Organizational Development from the University of San Francisco and a Bachelor of Arts in Early Childhood Education and Teaching from Sonoma State University. She has built her career around services that support connection and well-being.
As Assistant Parks and Recreation Director, Box will help guide work across parks, facilities, and recreation services in Clayton. Her role supports the Town’s Parks and Recreation Master Plan, which outlines improvements to parks, green spaces, and recreation opportunities. The department manages parks, greenways, athletic fields, and community spaces that are part of everyday life in Clayton.
