CLAYTON – The Town of Clayton operations staff have sponsored three Flags for Heroes in honor of three of their former colleagues: Donnie Baker, Byron Poelman, and William “Bill” Simpson.

Baker, who passed away in June 2019, worked for the Town of Clayton as a Street Maintenance Crew Leader. He served the Town of Clayton for 13 years as a Streets, Public Works, and Water & Sewer professional.

Baker’s legacy lives on through his coworker’s memories and through his concrete and brick craftsmanship that can be seen throughout Downtown Clayton.

The brickwork that surrounds the front door of Hocutt-Ellington Memorial Library can be attributed to Baker’s skills. This same brick pattern was used by Batista Grading to craft the Donnie Baker Memorial at the Operations Center, which was dedicated to Baker on Sept. 21, 2022.

Poelman, who passed away in Oct. 2023, served the Town of Clayton in many capacities throughout the years, most recently as the Water Resources Director. His unwavering dedication and tireless efforts made a remarkable impact on our community. Byron was not only a colleague but also a cherished friend to many. His generous spirit and exceptional work ethic earned him the respect and admiration of all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Throughout his 26-year career with the Town, Byron played a pivotal role in the growth of the Water Resources Department. His leadership was instrumental in driving forward crucial water-related capital projects, leaving behind a legacy that will benefit our community for years to come.

Simpson, who passed away in April 2024, served as the Water Reclamation Superintendent at the Little Creek Wastewater Treatment Facility on Durham St. Additionally, his contributions to the decisions that have gone into the new Sam’s Branch Water Reclamation Facility have left an indelible mark on the community. His passion for his work was matched only by his unwavering kindness and willingness to lend a helping hand to anyone in need.

“Donnie, Byron, and Bill were more than just colleagues; they were the heart and soul of our operations team. Each of them brought their unique skills, dedication, and kindness to their work, leaving a lasting impact on our community,” said Town of Clayton Sr. Administrative Support Specialist Heather Propst. “Donnie’s craftsmanship, Byron’s leadership, and Bill’s passion have shaped the Town of Clayton in countless ways. Their memories will forever be a part of us, and their legacy lives on through the lasting contributions they made. These flags are a small token of our immense gratitude for the heroes they were to us all.”

In recognition of the lasting contribution these men made to the Town of Clayton, their colleagues, and the community three flags have been placed on display at the Flags for Heroes Clayton Field of Honor next to Johnston Health on Highway 42 in Clayton. A printed list is available at the Field of Honor to tell visitors where the flags are located. The Field of Honor flag display will be open to the public until June 16.

Johnston County Flags for Heroes is an initiative of Johnston County’s three Rotary Clubs, Clayton Rotary Club, Cleveland School Rotary Club, and the Rotary Club of Central Johnston County. Flags for Heroes sponsorships afford the three Rotary Clubs in Johnston County the ability to provide community programs, donations to worthy causes, and scholarships to local high school seniors, among other projects.
