Motorist Dies In Single Vehicle Crash Near Benson

BENSON – A 63 year-old man died in a single vehicle accident Friday morning on Stephenson Road just west of NC 50.

The Highway Patrol said Dane Browder of Benson was traveling westbound in his 1999 Pontiac Firebird convertible when he ran off Stephenson Road to the right, struck a ditch and overturned.

Browder, who was wearing a seat belt, died at the scene.

His large dog was ejected. The dog was later found by Johnston County Animal Services and taken to a veterinarian for evaluation. The dog is expected to survive.

Troopers said speed may have played a factor. Authorities are also looking into whether a medical issue may have contributed to the single vehicle accident.
