Clayton Police, JCSO Conduct Traffic Enforcement Operation

CLAYTON – On Saturday night into early Sunday morning, Clayton Police and the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office SAFE team conducted a traffic enforcement operation in Clayton focusing on high traffic roadways and streets, as well as high frequency areas of vehicle collisions and impaired driving.

Approximately 15 police officers and deputies participated in the operation along with representatives from the Johnston County District Attorney’s Office, Johnston County 911, State Highway Patrol, and the NCDHHS Breath Alcohol Testing Mobile Unit program.

Clayton Police Chief Greg Tart stated that a high volume of vehicles travel through the Town every day. As a result, police investigate about 1,100 motor vehicle accidents a year.

Chief Tart said the police department is making a stronger commitment to be more proactive and visible in high traffic areas and in school zones to slow drivers down.

Most of the traffic accidents in Clayton are caused by speeding and distracted drivers.

Chief Tart said additional traffic enforcement operations, both daytime and nighttime, will continue in an effort to make roadways and streets safer.
