Clayton To Explore Future Of Historic Robertson Mule Building

CLAYTON, N.C. – The Town of Clayton will host a public presentation focused on the history of the B.M. Robertson Mule Co. Building and possible future uses for the downtown landmark.

The event will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 14, in the auditorium at The Clayton Center, 111 E. Second Street. It is free and open to the public.

The evening will begin with the premiere of From Mules to Memories, a new documentary about the history of the Robertson Mule Building.

The film includes stories from members of the Robertson family and community residents who share memories and historical connections to the property.

The B.M. Robertson Mule Co. once served area farmers and families during a period when mules were widely used for farm work and transportation.

The building remained as Clayton grew and changed and is now considered one of Downtown Clayton’s historic landmarks.

Following the documentary, town officials will present initial findings from an adaptive reuse study examining possible ways the building could be used in the future while preserving its historic character.

Residents attending the presentation will also be invited to provide feedback through an online survey.

The comments will be shared with the Clayton Town Council and town staff as they consider potential future uses for the property.

The Sept. 14 presentation is intended to give residents an opportunity to learn more about the building’s history before weighing in on what its next use could be.
