Cleveland High School Senior James “Jay” Waltman has been selected for the North Carolina State University Goodnight Scholars Program and has been selected as a Levine Scholar for the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.
Jay is the first American Indian student to be awarded the honor of the Levine Scholarship and he is the first student in his Lumbee Indian Tribe to be awarded both the Levine and the Goodnight Scholarships. Jay is one of 20 students worldwide to receive the Levine Scholarship and one of 50 students in North Carolina to receive the Goodnight Scholarship.
The $78,000 Goodnight Scholarship is limited to students studying in the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines or affiliated education majors.
The $105,000 Levine Scholarship selection is a worldwide competition where scholars are chosen based on a student’s passion for learning, capacity for ethical leadership and community service.
Waltman has accepted the Goodnight Scholarship and will attend North Carolina State University in the fall. He plans on pursuing a major in Engineering. Contributed photo
