Company Withdraws Plans For 501-Job Selma Manufacturing Plant

SELMA, N.C. — A window and door manufacturer that announced plans in 2024 to bring more than 500 jobs to Johnston County has decided not to move forward with the project.

Crystal Window & Door Systems had announced plans in May 2024 to invest $83.6 million in a manufacturing facility in Selma and create 501 jobs.

The company recently informed local and state officials it will no longer pursue the Johnston County project.

Johnston County Economic Development Director Chris Johnson said changing market conditions appear to have played a role in the company’s decision.

“Fundamental changes in market conditions often prompt companies to reconsider expansion plans, and that appears to be the case for Crystal,” Johnson said. “We wish them well as they make the necessary adjustments.”

Johnson noted that no local or state incentive grant money was paid to the company because the incentives were structured around performance benchmarks.

“Unforeseen technical and business challenges are among the reasons Johnston County economic development incentives are performance-based and self-funded,” Johnson said. “Thus no grants were ever issued, providing protection for taxpayers.”

When the project was announced by Governor Roy Cooper in 2024, Crystal Window & Door Systems said the Selma facility would manufacture aluminum and vinyl windows and doors. The project was expected to become one of the larger manufacturing announcements in Johnston County in recent years.

Under the original agreement, the company was approved for a potential Job Development Investment Grant from the State of North Carolina. However, incentive payments would only have been issued after the company met specific job creation and investment targets.

Crystal Window & Door Systems is headquartered in Flushing, New York, and operates manufacturing facilities in several states across the country.
