SMITHFIELD – Friday afternoon, District 1 Smithfield Town Councilman Marlon Lee filed for the office of Mayor.

After filing for Mayor, Mr. Lee released the following statement: “My motivation for running for Mayor of Smithfield stems from the imminent economic growth and increasing population, which calls for a fresh perspective and new leadership. Having served on the council for a decade, it is evident that we must break free from outdated practices and embrace innovative approaches. This includes fostering diversity within all departments, starting with our police department, to ensure that they truly reflect the vibrant community we reside in. Moreover, it is crucial that we consistently communicate to all residents and employees that they are valued and respected, not just during election periods. I am grateful for the encouragement I have received from residents across all districts to pursue the role of Mayor of Smithfield.”

Councilman Lee will challenge incumbent Mayor Andy Moore who is anticipated to file for reelection later today (Friday).

The filing period for Smithfield Mayor and three At-Large council seats up for election this year will remain open until Friday, July 21, 2023 at Noon.
