Counterfeit $20 Bills Passed At Local Stores

Smithfield Police are investigating two reports within the past week of counterfeit $20 bills being passed at local businesses.

A fake $20 bill was passed last Friday at the Kangaroo convenience store on North Brightleaf Boulevard. On Tuesday, a bogus $20 bill was discovered at Wal-Mart on North Brightleaf Boulevard.

Police Chief Keith Powell said the incidents are under investigation.  Officers are encouraging store clerks to keep a close eye on the paper currency that they receive. Authorities have not said if the two incidents may be connected.
