Local businesses are being asked to be on the lookout for counterfeit money. On Thursday and Friday, counterfeit $50 bills were passed at three stores in Smithfield. The bills had two different serial numbers, according to Smithfield Police spokesperson Captain R.K. Powell.
Police do not know if a counterfeit $5 bill passed at the Dollar Tree on North Brightleaf Boulevard on Thursday is related.
In April, a counterfeit $10 bill was passed at the Dollar Tree.
In March 2014, bogus $50 bills with the same serial number were passed at stores in Smithfield and Selma, including the Dollar Tree.
In July 2014, 7 counterfeit $100 bills were passed in Smithfield.
