A section of North Brightleaf Boulevard (US 301 North) in Smithfield was briefly shutdown Tuesday following a serious three vehicle accident.
Around 10:45am, a tractor trailer was traveling northbound on Brightleaf Boulevard just north of Hospital Road when it collided with a southbound Chevy Silverado pickup truck. The pickup truck then collided with a blue minivan also traveling southbound.
The driver of the pickup truck was pinned in the wreckage for about 30 minutes before being cut free by crews from the Smithfield Fire Department. The driver was then rushed by Johnston County EMS to Wake Medical Center for treatment of serious injuries.
The tractor trailer was so badly damaged it had to be towed from the scene by a heavy duty wrecker.
Smithfield Police shut down both directions of N. Brightleaf Boulevard until the wreckage and debris could be removed from the roadway. Police are still investigating the crash. JoCoReport.com Photos
