Crash Knocks Out Power To Much Of Smithfield

SMITHFIELD – Much of Smithfield lost electricity Friday morning after a single-vehicle accident on Hospital Road knocked a power substation offline.

The collision happened around 9 a.m. when a passenger car ran off Hospital Road, traveled through a deep ditch and struck guy wires supporting a Duke Energy utility pole.

Although the pole was not damaged, the impact triggered a power surge that caused the nearby Hospital Road substation to go offline, resulting in a widespread outage across town.

Duke Energy crews responded to Smithfield to restart the substation.

Power was restored to most customers around 10:30 a.m.

Smithfield Police said the driver of the vehicle left the scene on foot following the crash.

At last report, police were still working to identify the driver.
