The Johnston County Sheriff’s Office is consulting with US Postal Inspectors after someone set fire to numerous pieces of US Mail.
Deputies were called Wednesday morning to homes on Crantock Road and Patricia Drive outside of Smithfield after someone set fire to mail left by postal carriers at three different addresses. Detective Lt. D.N. Pate said mail was burned inside two mailboxes. In a third case, the mail was actually removed from the box before being set on fire.
Anyone who saw any suspicious activity in the area is asked to contact the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office at 919-989-5010.
Tampering with US Mail can be a federal offense punishable by up to 5 years in prison.
