CLAYTON – A Johnston County deputy sheriff shot and killed a man in the parking lot at UNC Health Johnston in Clayton. Around 5:46am Monday, the deputy was leaving the hospital parking lot when he was confronted by an unknown male.

During the encounter, authorities said the suspect attempted to gain control of the deputy’s firearm. A struggle ensued into the parking lot where the deputy was able to regain control of his firearm, and shots were fired resulting in the death of the suspect.

Sheriff Bizzell and District Attorney Doyle have requested the NC SBI to investigate the incident, which is normal protocol in an officer-involved shooting.

The deputy involved has been placed on administrative leave with pay. The name of the officer and the person who was killed has not been released.

  1. I am so glad the man did not get hold of the Deputys gun and the Deputy as well as anyone else is ok. No telling what the man would have done with the Deputys gun. Thank God he won’t be a problem for anyone else! I pray for the Deputy to have an understanding that he had no choice and that he did the right thing.

  2. Curious if the deputy and the deceased were known to each other in any manner. The entire thing seems a bit questionable but I’ll wait until the SBI releases info before assuming anything. Bc cameras are all over the hospital….

    • I agree with you. Something about this doesn’t seem right to me. It went from the officer was in his car leaving, to there was a struggle for his gun, and a man is dead. I am all for backing the Blue, when they are in the right, and unfortunately something seems off here. I am like you, and waiting for the SBI investigation.
