Distracted Driver Collides With Utility Pole, Police Say

SMITHFIELD – A distracted driver reportedly collided with a utility pole on Brightleaf Boulevard (US 301) in Smithfield. Smithfield Police responded Wednesday at 6:45am to the single vehicle crash, near the intersection of E. Johnston Street.

Juan Cavinal Cruz, 49, of Smithfield was traveling southbound on Brightleaf Boulevard in a 2015 Ford pickup when he ran off the roadway to the right and struck the utility pole.

Police said Cruz told them he was distracted by his cell phone ringing and when he looked down at the cell phone the truck veered off the roadway striking the pole.

Cruz was not injured in the collision. Damage to the Town of Smithfield utility pole was placed at $2,000. Damage to his Ford truck was estimated at $1,500.

Cruz was cited by police for failing to maintain lane control and driving without a license.

  1. Far too many driving without a license, no insurance, and invalid registration. Penalties need to be much more severe when it is shown it is done intentionally.
