A 10 year-old boy was briefly hospitalized Saturday after being bitten by a dog. The child was riding his bike on Longview Drive when he saw a dog he thought was friendly.
When he stopped to pet the dog, police said the animal bit him on the hand and lip. The juvenile was taken to the hospital where he received stitches to close the wounds.
After responding to the scene, Smithfield Police said they located the owner of the dog. The dog had been placed in a backyard fence at the owners home but managed to escape. The dog was current on all vaccinations, police said. No charges are expected to be filed.
