Dog Shot After Attacking Police Officer

CLAYTON – A Clayton police officer is recovering from injuries after being attacked by a pit bulldog. Police Chief Greg Tart said the incident happened around 12:45pm Thursday on Atkinson Street.

An officer on routine patrol observed a large pit bull walking down the street with no leash or owner. The officer tried to approach the dog, but it ran behind a home in the 200 block of Atkinson Street

Chief Tart said the officer went to a residence and spoke to a female who claimed the dog belonged to her. After the officer spoke to the owner about securing the dog, he was walking back to his patrol car and the pit bull came around from the back of the house and attacked the officer.

The officer pulled his firearm and fired one shot at the dog as he was being attacked. The officer was bitten on his forearm and the upper back of his leg.

The officer was treated at the scene by Johnston County EMS.

The injured dog was transported to a veterinarian for treatment.

Chief Tart said Clayton Animal Control responded and are working with the owners on potential ordinance violations and leash law requirements.

  1. There is a church right there across from where the dog attacked the officer. It’s a good thing it won’t on a Sunday, some kid or church attendant could have been attacked. Dog owner needs to follow the law and keep her dog fenced in.
