Dog Tied To Pole, Abandoned At Shopping Center

Police and animal control officers are trying to figure out why someone would intentionally abandon a dog in a busy Smithfield shopping center.

Smithfield Police were dispatched to Pine Needle Plaza on N. Brightleaf Boulevard Monday after a concerned citizen reporting see a dog tied by its leash to a light pole next to the Pizza Hut drive thru and abandoned.

The incident happened about a mile away from the Johnston County Animal Shelter where someone could have easily surrendered the animal.  The dog was taken to the shelter and has no apparent injuries or known issues.

Police and animal control checked security cameras at nearby businesses but didn’t have any luck identifying who abandoned the dog. Authorities believe it happened sometime between 8:00am and 10:00am Monday.

If you have any information about the abandoned dog please contact the Town of Smithfield Animal Control at 919-989-1074 or 919-934-2121.  Callers may remain anonymous.

In an unrelated incident on Oct 9th, an 8 year-old partially-blind dog named Sasha was found tied to a pole at the Summit Medical Building in Clayton. The dog was held at the Johnston County Animal Shelter before being adopted.
