The NC Department of Transportation has award contracts for the replacement of three bridges in Johnston County.
Bridges on Glendale Road over Little Buffalo Creek, Woodruff Road over Buffalo Creek and Joyner Bridge Road over Hannah Creek will be replaced. All the bridges are more than 60 years old.
Fred Smith Company of Raleigh received a nearly $1.4 million contract for the two Buffalo Creek bridges. The contractor can start on Glendale Road between Sept. 18 and Dec. 1 and will have 125 days to finish. The contractor can start on Woodruff Roasd after Sept. 18, with a 165-day construction schedule.
United Contractors Inc. of Iowa, which won a $917,584 contract for the Hannah Creek bridge replacement, can begin work in late September. The new bridge is expected to open by July 1, 2018 with minor vegetative work to follow.
The DOT says the bridges are structurally outdated, expensive to maintain and impose vehicle weight limits.
