DOT To Hold Open House For Wayne County Road Project

Public meeting is Feb. 26

To improve safety and traffic flow, the N.C. Department of Transportation would widen a section of North Berkeley Boulevard (U.S. 13) in Wayne County.

The public is invited to attend an open house from 4 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 26, to learn more about the proposal and submit feedback. The meeting is at the Maxwell Center, 3114 Wayne Memorial Drive.

The project would transform the boulevard into a four-lane road with a raised median between New Hope and Saulston roads. As part of the project, the traffic signals on U.S. 13 at New Hope Road, Tommy’s Road and at Hood Swamp Road would be upgraded.  Additionally, Hood Swamp Road and Central Heights Road would be realigned to create safer intersections at U.S. 13 and improve driver visibility.

The Goldsboro Metropolitan Planning Organization, which helps guide transportation projects, requested the department improve this 3.4-mile segment of North Berkeley Boulevard, which now has between two and three lanes. The project scored well enough through NCDOT’s Strategic Mobility Formula to become funded.

The project, estimated to cost $25 million to construct, is scheduled to be awarded in 2023.
