Dr. Gettys Cohen Jr. Appointed To Smithfield Town Council
SMITHFIELD – In a unanimous decision Tuesday night, the Smithfield Town Council appointed Dr. Gettys Cohen Jr. to fill the vacant District 1 seat, following the passing of Councilman Marlon Lee in May. Dr. Cohen was sworn into office immediately after his selection.
Dr. Cohen was selected from a pool of three applicants, which also included Felicia Baxter and Nariman Jeff Jaminia. His appointment is effective immediately and will run through December 2, 2025.
The District 1 seat will be on the ballot in the upcoming municipal election on November 4. Both Dr. Cohen and Felicia Baxter have filed to run for the full four-year term.
Dr. Cohen joins the council during a period of transition and anticipation, as voters prepare to elect a permanent representative for District 1 later this year.

Let me tell you something. Dr. Cohen and Mrs. Shirley are friends/customers of mine and these two people are 1st class. I love these great people and am going to personally congratulate Dr. Cohen on Monday.

I love this. Dr. Cohen is a wonderful gentleman and a most fair person. I wish there were many more like him in Johnston County positions.
