Driver Charged In Fatal Motorcycle Collision

BENSON – Death by motor vehicle charges have been filed against the driver of a car that state troopers said caused a fatal crash with a motorcycle.  It happened at 3:30pm Friday on Highway 27 at Red Hill Church Road outside of Benson in the edge of Harnett County.
NC Highway Patrol Sgt. R.E. Mellott said a 2006 Ford passenger car driven by Jesse Potter, 38, of Erwin was traveling north of Red Hill Church Road and had stopped for a stop sign at the rural intersection.  Harry Denton, 74, of Coats was traveling east on Highway 27 on a 2002 Harley Davidson.

Potter pulled from the intersection into the path of the motorcycle. The impact ejected Denton.  He was transported by ambulance to Wake Med where he died from his injuries early Saturday morning.

Trooper J.D. Foushee charged Potter with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle.

Sgt. Mellott said this was the first of three motorcycle accidents over-the-weekend in Harnett County. “We’re seeing more motorcycles on the roadway. Please be looking for them.  They’re definitely back on the road with the weather getting warmer.”
