A man who led law enforcement officers on a high speed chase on Interstate 40 and Interstate 95 is in custody. Around 12:30pm Tuesday, Sampson County Sheriff’s Captain Eric Pope said a deputy tried to stop a white Chevy van involved in a hit and run collision in the I-40 work zone in Sampson County. The driver failed to pull over.
Sampson County deputies pursued the van on Interstate 40 into Johnston County, then southbound on Interstate 95 to Benson. The vehicle ran off the exit ramp in Benson and the driver ran into a wooded area.
Law enforcement officers and K-9 units from Johnston and Sampson counties conducted a lengthy ground search in the wooded area and eventually located the suspect. The man, whose name was not immediately released, was not injured but was transported to the hospital for evaluation. He was later taken to the Sampson County Detention Center.
