CLAYTON – An elderly Clayton resident was recently scammed out of $25,000. The victim reported in February that she received a bill from PayPal, which turned out to be a fictitious invoice.
The 82 year-old woman was tricked into paying $4,000 then another $21,000 in the form of prepaid gift cards.
The incident remains under investigation by the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office.
Y’all call your parents and educate them on this stuff.
You’re exactly right! Some of this blame is on the children of these elderly victims. It’s mind boggling the stories you see of these people being scammed. If you have elderly parents or family members and you don’t know what they are doing especially with big amounts of money, you should be ashamed. It’s sad!
It’s a da*n shame these scumbags prey on elderly folks that don’t know any better ..: Karma
People just can’t be this stupid
The max amount on gift cards is $500, so this 82 year old lady bought 42 gift cards. And not one store employee questioned her? I think all stores that sell gift cards should train their employees to spot the signs of an elderly person being scammed. It is the least these stores should do.
