UPDATE 8:45PM – The victim has been identified as Dameon Matthew Mills, 33, of Princeton. Authorities said Mills was killed instantly in the crash.
PRINCETON – One person died in a head on collision today (Monday) on a rural Johnston County roadway. The collision happened around 2:00pm in the 2800 block of Richardson Bridge Road south of Princeton near the Johnston-Wayne County line.
A pickup truck was traveling northbound on Richardson Bridge Road near Riverside Freewill Baptist Church when the driver crossed the centerline and slammed head on into a southbound tractor trailer. The pickup truck came to rest partially off the roadway. The semi ran off the opposite side of the roadway and came to rest in a ditch.
The driver of the pickup died at the scene. There were no other occupants in the truck. The driver of the tractor trailer was not injured.
Troopers said speed and alcohol were not contributing factors. Officers are still investigating why the pickup crossed left of center striking the semi. The name of the person killed was not released.
The Bentonville Fire Department, Grantham Fire Department, Johnston County EMS, Johnston County Sheriff’s Office and NC Highway Patrol responded to the scene.
