Driver Standing Outside Vehicle Killed In Crash

One person was killed and two others were injured following an overnight crash in Johnston County. Officials have not said if the weather played a factor in the accident Monday night at 11:22pm on the US 70 Clayton Bypass near Ranch Road.

A SUV was towing a trailer carrying a motorcycle in the far right eastbound lane on the US 70 Bypass when it became disabled.  The driver was standing outside the SUV attempting to move the vehicle from the roadway when it was struck from behind by a passenger car.

The driver of the SUV was struck and fatally injured. He was pronounced dead at the scene.  A passenger in the SUV was standing beside the trailer at the time of the collision. He was struck by debris from the crash and was transported to the hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

The driver of the car also sustained non-life threatening injuries and was transported to the hospital.

The NC Highway Patrol is still investigating the accident. The names of those involved was not immediately released.

A second accident was reported a short time later on the Ranch Road exit at the US 70 Bypass. A tractor trailer loaded with food products overturned causing a small fuel spill. Photos by John Payne
