Driverless Car Strikes Pedestrian In Parking Lot

SMITHFIELD – A pedestrian was transported to WakeMed after he was struck by a driverless car. The incident happened July 12 around 11:02 a.m. on N. Brightleaf Boulevard near Waddell Drive.

Smithfield Police said a driver failed to put a vehicle into park after getting out of their car. The vehicle rolled forward pinning the pedestrian between the front of driverless car and the rear bumper of a stationary vehicle.

The motorist then got back into their car and drove away before checking on the pedestrian to see if they were injured, according to witnesses.

The pedestrian waited an hour before calling 911 to report the hit and run.

Smithfield Police have reportedly identified the owner of the hit and run vehicle. The investigation remains ongoing.
