A dump truck caught fire and burned Thursday afternoon in northern Johnston County.
The fully loaded truck was traveling on Highway 231 at Richardson Road when the brakes overheated causing the fire. A large wrecker was called to the scene to move the truck off the roadway but it became stuck in the mud.
Nearby construction workers used a track hoe to push then pull the wreck out of the mud then scooped 20 tons of stone out of the dump truck so it could be towed away.
There were no injuries reported, but the incident caused traffic delays.
The Corinth Holders Fire Department responded to the scene to extinguish the truck fire. The Johnston County Sheriff’s Office assisted with traffic. Photos by John Payne
