The Johnston County School Board has approved a new school calendar for students attending the Early and Middle College High Schools for the 2016-17 school year.
Chief Personnel Officer Brian Vetrano told members of the school board the early and middle college schools have received a waiver from the calendar law. The waiver will allow the school to begin and end on dates different than required by law. Current law requires public schools to begin on the Monday closes to August 25th each year.
The waiver will allow students taking both high school and community college courses to better align their class schedules.
Under the newly adopted schedule, Early and Middle College classes on the campus of Johnston Community College will begin on August 2nd, 2016 and end on May 19th, 2017. Fall break will occur Oct. 10th – Oct. 14th. Christmas break is from Dec. 19th – Jan 2nd. Spring break is March 6th-10th, 2017. Graduation will be held on May 19th, 2017. Five inclement weather days are built into the calendar.
The School Board also adopted new school calendars for South Smithfield Elementary and West Smithfield Elementary which are both year-around schools.
