An Erwin woman’s family reunited in Dunn on Friday to help her celebrate a century of life.
Some of Thelma Moore’s relatives, including her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, surrounded the centenarian at Cornerstone Nursing of Dunn, where she now lives. They celebrated while she watched, listened and enjoyed her family.
Moore is a Harnett County native who worked at Erwin Mills for many years. She is the eldest of 11 children and one of only four still surviving. She is the matriarch of a family whose members admit with smiles they don’t even know how large they are.
She’s the mother of five girls and one boy and has numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. There are now six generations of her family still living.
The family circle has come together to support Moore, who was known by many as Lucille when she was younger. Her maiden name was Morrison, also a large family with roots in the area.
Her daughters have, at times, gathered around her to administer care.
“One of us used to come every day and help feed her,” daughter Loujean Bradshaw said.
Another daughter, Betty Simmons, had her mom live with her and her family in Washington state. These days, six generations of loved ones make regular stops at Cornerstone to visit.
Time has take its toll on Moore and at times she has trouble recognizing people who are not her children.
“This is my baby,” she said as Bradshaw leaned in for a kiss.
