SMITHFIELD – An 18-wheel farm truck transporting sweet potatoes overturned, Monday afternoon. The single vehicle wreck was reported on Brogden Road, about 9 miles east of Smithfield, near Grabtown Road.
According to the State Highway Patrol, the semi was traveling eastbound on Brogden Road when it ran off the right side of the roadway in a curve, traveled into a ditch, and overturned. The driver escaped without any injuries.
The entire load of sweet potatoes spilled onto the highway and into a field.
About 90 minutes after the accident, numerous farm workers arrived and began picking up the potatoes.
Trooper T.C. Duff cited the driver for reckless driving and not having a Class A license.
The State Highway Patrol, Johnston County Sheriff’s Office, Brogden Fire Department and Johnston County EMS responded to the scene.
Sweet Potatoes, Sweet. They should have left the potatoes there and opened a farm stand, sweet potatoes 9 for $1.00. They would have been cleaned up real fast 🙂
