Smithfield Police are investigating a traffic accident that claimed one life. Around 3:40pm, two vehicles collided on W. Market Street (US 70) at Durwood Stephenson Highway in West Smithfield.
After the impact one vehicle ran off the roadway and collided with a utility pole.
One person died at the scene. A second person was transported by ambulance to the hospital with unknown injuries.
Eastbound lanes of W. Market Street were closed for about an hour before reopening.
The Smithfield Police Department, Smithfield Fire Department, Johnston County EMS and Johnston County Medical Examiner’s Office responded to the scene.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
