A vehicle burst into flames after colliding with a garbage truck just before noon today (Tuesday). The collision happened in the 4500 block of Highway 96 South of Four Oaks near Blackman’s Crossroads.
According to the State Highway Patrol, a Waste Industries garbage truck pulled from a private drive onto Highway 96 directly in the path of a southbound SUV. The SUV collided with the right front corner of the truck. The impact sent the SUV into a ditch where it immediately caught fire.
A female driver and small child in the SUV were able to escape the wreckage without serious injuries. They were checked out at the scene by Johnston County EMS but were not transported to the hospital. The truck driver was not injured.
The collision caused a significant hydraulic fluid spill from the garbage truck.
Highway 96 South will be closed for several hours this afternoon between Strickland’s Crossroads Road and Blackmon Road until the scene can be cleared.
