A row of vacant single story apartments caught fire around midnight Thursday at 1015 S. Lombard Street across from West Clayton Elementary School.
The Clayton Fire Department was assisted by units from the Cleveland and Garner Fire Departments to extinguish the flames. The Clayton Fire Marshal is investigating the cause.
The fire was first reported by a neighbor who smelled smoke.
